Birch Lake

The Walker, Hackensack, Longville area is an incredibly beautiful area with more lakes than we have time to visit!  Birch Lake is “in” Hackensack, MN; in fact, the public access is downtown Hackensack.  While Birch Lake may not be as well-known as Leech Lake, Ten Mile Lake, or Woman Lake, it is a popular “local” lake.

Birch Lake is a beautiful, irregular-shaped, clear lake.  If you do a Search for the City of Hackensack, you’ll see how close Birch Lake is to Ten Mile Lake and other lakes in the area.  Parts of Birch Lake and Ten Mile Lake are just a stone’s throw from each other!

According to the Hackensack MN Chamber of Commerce, there are 127 lakes within a 10-mile radius from Hackensack.

Introduction

With 15 miles of shoreline, Birch Lake property includes a variety of types of lake homes, lake access homes, and cabins.  Birch Lake has a variety of waterfront properties — everything from stunning log homes with panoramic lake views to quaint small cabins with sunset or sunrise lake views.

The Birch Lake Association has an active membership.  They are an excellent resource for learning how to improve shoreline vegetation to protect habitat and water quality.

About Birch Lake

According to the DNR, Birch Lake is one of 514 lakes in Cass County.  Birch Lake is a 1,267-acre clear lake; has 15 miles of shoreline; and has a maximum depth is 45 feet.

Things to Do

Whether people are visiting or own real estate in the Walker, Hackensack, Longville area, there is something for everyone to do in the Leech Lake, Ten Mile Lake, Woman Lake, and Birch Lake area.

  • Visting a Landmark

One of the area’s landmarks is in Hackensack!  The giant statue of Lucette, Paul Bunyan’s sweetheart, is downtown Hackensack, near the public access, Chamber of Commerce building, and City Park.

  • Visiting the Hackensack City Park

Hackensack’s City Park is a great place for kids to play.  It also has a covered pavilion and is steps away from a beach, fishing pier, and the Chamber’s office.  It also has restrooms!  The Paul Bunyan State Trail passes through the City Park and is a great place for cyclists to take a break.

  • Fishing

Northern Pike, Walleye, Black Crappie, and Largemouth Bass are the fish most commonly caught in Birch Lake.  The DNR has more information about Birch Lake’s fish species and regulations.

If you do not have a boat, no problem!  There is a fishing pier in Hackensack’s City Park.

If you plan to launch on Birch Lake, please take the necessary precautions not to spread aquatic invasive species.

  • Participating in the Kids’ Fishing Contest

During the summer, Hackensack hosts a Kids’ Fishing Contest every Tuesday.  Check out the Hackensack MN Chamber of Commerce for more details about the fun and all the chances to win prizes and other events.

  • Exploring the Paul Bunyan State Trail

We are very fortunate to have the 115-mile paved Paul Bunyan State Trail go through our area.  This Trail is primarily used in the summer for walking and cycling; and in the winter, it is used primarily for snowmobiling.  In 2011 the Paul Bunyan Trail was inducted into the Rail-Trail Hall of Fame, which says a lot about the qualities of the Trail.

The Paul Bunyan State Trail goes through downtown Hackensack.  There is ample parking near the Trail.

  • Golfing

There are two 18-hole public golf courses within 25 minutes of Hackensack:  LongBow Golf Club and Tianna Country Club.  There is also a 9-hole golf course:  Wedgewood Golf Course.

  • Hunting

If you do not have your own land to hunt, there is public land in Cass County.  Hunting is allowed on some public land in Cass County.  Be sure to check the Cass County, MN, website or search a county plat book to obtain information about public land to be aware of the property boundaries and land topography.
