More Information

For those of you who are wondering — yes, there are lakes called Baby Lake, Boy Lake, and Mann Lake, and Kid Lake! These lakes are near the Woman Lake Chain.

According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Woman Lake is in a classification that includes lakes that are very large, deep, irregularly shaped, and have clear water. Woman Lake has a maximum depth of 54 feet; Girl Lake is the deepest lake in the chain with a maximum depth of 81 feet. Things to Do

Fishing

As indicated by the DNR, Woman Lake provides good to excellent fishing of many species of fish. Most anglers fish for walleye; however, yellow perch, black crappie, largemouth bass, muskie, northern pike, rock bass, smallmouth bass, and sunfish are also popular species. According to Cass County, there are 2 public boat landings on Woman Lake. Each of the boat landings has parking spaces.

In a typical winter, our area lakes freeze, which provides great opportunities to continue the fishing season. Did you know, people drive full-size trucks onto the frozen lakes and have ice houses that are as comfortable as most luxury RVs with heat, beds, satellite TV, and, of course, ice holes?

Visiting a Walleye Spawn-take Operation

In the spring, DNR Section of Fisheries operates a major walleye spawn-take operation on the Boy River upstream from Woman Lake. As the fish are contained in a large pen area in the water on the Boy River, visitors may walk on the docks surrounding the pen area and see all the walleye. After the walleye are tagged, they are released from the pen unharmed. As the result of the spawn-take or milking, the fry and fingerlings are used to restock various lakes in Minnesota.

Racing a Turtle

That’s right…turtle races! Painted turtles are very common turtles in the area and can be seen in the spring crossing roads and lawns to lay their eggs. Longville is famous for its painted turtle races that are held every Wednesday in the summer. Longvilles’ main street is closed to traffic during the races because about 200 people join in the fun!

Canoeing or Kayaking

The Woman Lake area has a variety of canoe/kayak routes. The Boy River Canoe route is beautiful. Part of the route flows from Girl Lake and eventually flows to Boy Bay of Leech Lake. The Longville Chamber of Commerce has more information about canoe/kayak routes.

Snowmobiling

The Longville Chamber of Commerce has a map of the area snowmobile trails. As mentioned above, Cass County has 450 miles of interconnected, groomed, and scenic trails. The Longville Lakes Area Snowmobile Club is very active. The Club’s contact information is on the Longville Chamber’s website. People who want to go on group rides may contact this person.

Golfing

Golfing is a very popular sport in the Woman Lake area. There are a number of public golf courses in the Brainerd and Walker areas. The two closest golf courses to Longville are Emily Greens Golf Course and Golden Eagle Golf Club.

No matter what you are hungry for…or your budget, the Woman Lake area has a restaurant for you. Some of the areas’ resorts also have restaurants!
