We are very fortunate to have many miles of paved and unpaved trails in the Leech Lake area. The Paul Bunyan State Trail may be the most popular paved rail-to-trail system in the Leech Lake area. However, there are other paved trails; and, of course, miles and miles of unpaved trails. The multi-use Paul Bunyan State Trail is approximately 120 miles of paved trail from Crow Wing State Park (just south of Brainerd) to Bemidji State Park (in Bemidji). This trail and other trails in the area are used year-round for walking, hiking, biking, inline skating, or snowmobiling. With about 15 towns near the trails, there are many choices for lodging and dining. Of Continue Reading

Mississippi River Headwaters
The Mississippi River Headwaters is located in Itasca State Park and is only 34 miles from Walker MN and Leech Lake. However, at the headwaters of the Mississippi River, you can walk across it…it’s a shallow stream or creek! Regardless of age, everyone I have taken to the headwaters has enjoyed walking across the Mississippi River. The MN DNR has a panoramic tour you can view online…just to make sure it’s something you want to see Continue Reading

The BLT Season
Living in the little village of Whipholt (approximately 13 miles straight east of Walker), my husband and I don’t have much of a back yard, per say. But every year, my husband uses what little backyard we have to plant a few tomato plants. Once the tomatoes have been planted, I then begin to scour the Super One ads each week for bacon coupons and sales. We do our best to stock up for what we refer to as “The BLT Season”. When our tomato plants begin to “bear fruit”, we rarely eat anything BUT homemade BLTs. When it is not “The BLT Season”, I love to order BLT’s from some of our local restaurants. If you can’t tell, I like to think of myself as something of Continue Reading

The Heather Hauser Group is honored to have veterans in our lives. We appreciate all the men and women who are serving and have served, sacrificed, and protected the U.S.A. The following are three "formal" ways we have heard of so far that veterans are being honored and celebrated in the Leech Lake Walker Continue Reading

Memorial Day is a day to remember men and women who have died while serving in the U.S. military. Although Memorial Day has been observed since 1868, it wasn’t until 1971 that it became an official federal Monday holiday. According to the U. S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs, between 1775 and 1991 almost 42 million American’s have served in the military. That’s an incredible number of incredible people. Almost 1.2 million men and women have lost their lives in battle, in theater, or in service non-theatre. They lost their lives to ensure our freedom. All over the United States there will be Memorial Day services. We, of course, have local Memorial Day Continue Reading
